Ghana was the first African country south of the Sahara to liberate itself from colonial domination. On 6th March, 1957, it gained independence from British colonial rule. In spite of its relative small size, its foreign policy was of tremendous influence the world over, particularly in Africa and the developing world. The broad tenets of Ghana's foreign policy relate to the promotion and protection of the sovereign interest of Ghana, the establishment of a just and equitable international, economic, social and political order, the promotion of and respect for international law, and the adherence to the principles enshrined in the charter of the O.A.U. (now A.U.), the Commonwealth, Non-Aligned Movement, and other international organizations of which Ghana is a member.
