Billy Ghostkeeper is a dead man. Literally. The compliance officer for a First Nations band was shot in the head and left for dead. But even though he comes from a great line of chiefs and warriors, Billy is unable to cross over to the great hunting grounds, where the buffalo are plentiful. For some reason, Billy must stay and discover why he was murdered. At least that's what he was told by his spirit guide, a wisecracking magpie who has promised to guide Billy in his quest to pay back some sort of spirit guide gambling debt. So Billy calls on his Aunt Kena, an elder with the "eyes of fire" an affliction that is a blessing and a curse, a condition that allows her to see and hear across and along the boundaries of the spirit world. Reluctantly, she agrees to help, even though it will interfere with her TV watching and her bingo playing. She, in turn, enlists the help of her hapless, wanna-be gangsta rapper nephew, Dale, to be her and Billys feet on the ground, their "front man" in finding the truth. And through their strange, funny and sometimes harrowing adventures, Billy and his new gang of detectives discover that there are three reasons why he was killed: it might have be Native gangbangers out to punish him for a slight he made weeks ago. Or it might be someone from one of the local businesses who stand to lose a lot of money because Billy filed a report that could stop all gas and oil production and exploration on the bands land. Or maybe its someone or something else, a more dangerous person or group that is willing to do anything, to sacrifice anyone, in order to keep control of the natural resources that are on the land owned by the band.
