This Handbook provides a viable alternative to the use of the "list syndrome" approach in environmental impact assessment on various life forms. This volume focuses on aquatic species.Data are arranged in decreasing order of toxicity for aquatic species such as amphibians, algae, bacteria, crustaceans, fish, insects, molluscs, protozoa, and more. Species are arranged as phyllum-class-order-suborder-section. The book presents this information is a readily accessible format. The reader decides on the number of species to be protected and then selects the most toxic chemical for analysis. The book provides an important comparison of identical toxicity testing methods and duration of exposure, for example, LC5096h, to arrive at a ratio. The ambient concentration and its ratio to the toxic level will assist in selecting the cut-off chemical. This approach will maximize the use of resources and generate data that are relevant to the protectin of the species and ecosystem under study.
