History of Universities is an annual publication devoted to the study of every aspect of university history from the Middle Ages to 1945. Each volume consists of a number of articles and book reviews written by scholars from many different countries.
Volume VI chiefly comprises articles on the intellectual, social, and professional role of the late-medieval universities, especially Oxford and Paris. The volume is prefaced by an obituary notice dedicated to Charles Schmitt of the Warburg Institute, the internationally renowned Renaissance scholar and founding-editor of the journal, who died in April 1986. The new editor is Laurence Brockliss of Magdalen College, Oxford, a specialist in French higher education in the early-modern period. He is assisted by an editorial board drawn from the leading authorities on the history of the university in Great Britain, Europe, and the United States.
