Felice Fontana was an Italian physicist who discovered the water gas shift reaction in 1780.
Water gas is a combustion fuel containing carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen gas (H2). It is produced when steam is passed over red-hot coke (carbon):
H2O + C H2+ CO (H = +131kJ/mol
The water gas contains approximately 44%% of CO, 45%% H2, 5%% CO2 and 6%% Nitrogen. Both CO and H2 are flammable gases, and so water gas is used as a fuel. This gas provided a more efficient heating fuel than the common coal gas.
