This second selection of archive photographs featuring Hyde brings the story of the town up to the 1980s. During the last forty years there have been many changes in the buildings, shopping areas, market, population and local government. At one time Hyde was a very closely knit community when everyone knew most people's names and nicknames. Now family shops have disappeared and business that have employed Hydonians for years have either closed, are due to close or have moved. Gone are the Whit Walks, picture palaces and many of the concerts, festivals and bazaars that were organised by local people. Werneth Low remains, saved from the developers and some old buildings have been cleaned, restoring their former lustre. The images in this volume bring alive once again so much that has now disappeared; carnivals and queens, famrs, fields, Redfern's, mills, schools, girls in high buttoned booys, iron tipped clogs, football teams, churches and chapels to name but some. The old community has been split in many ways but there is still a deep sense of belonging. Dedicated to Hydonians wherever they may be, this fascinating collection will appeal to all those who know and love the area.
