Hydroinformatics deals with the application of information technology to the description and the control of hydraulic and hydrological systems within the aquatic environment. It has roots in the computational sciences, primarily computational hydraulics, with the objective of dealing with the foundations of logical modelling systems, such as expert systems and knowledge-based systems. Hydroinformatics has become an important support in water resources decision-making processes, providing access to the information that is obtained through monitoring or simulation and that is subject to constraints expressed in natural language, such as agreements, rules and regulations. Adopting a pragmatic approach, this two-volume work deals with a variety of topics, including: data collection; data storage and retrieval; numerical modelling; object-orientated programming; artificial intelligence; intelligent decision-support systems; management-support systems; and graphical user interfaces as a support system to data visualization and decision-making.
