I Want to Go!

Rene Thompson has been waiting all year for Negro Achievement Day. It falls on the second Monday in October. This is the one day that Negros get to go to the state fair. Mama has been telling her that when she is ten-years-old she will be old enough to go; this is the age when you can answer questions if you happen to get lost. Rene is worried that the nosey neighbors and the good church folks are doing everything possible to convince her father that it is too dangerous for Negros to travel to Dallas. The issue of going would be settled if it weren't for all the talk about protests, riots, and marching. Will Rene finally be able to go to the fair?
