El autor fue catedrtico por oposicin de la Escuela de Filosofa y Letras de la Universidad de La Habana y en 1960, exiliado en Estados Unidos, fue profesor de la Universidad de New York hasta su retiro en 1976 como Profesor Emritus. En Cuba fue fundador y presidente de la Sociedad Cubana de Filosofa.
