Well written and keenly observed, this interesting work on Japan at the turn of the nineteenth century is the work of a Canadian writer of some means and great ability. It covers the customs, the arts and manufactures, industries, ancestor worship, everyday people like farmers and ship keepers in very absorbing detail. The photographs by the author are very informative.
