In the Dojo

This is a collection of lively, detailed essays explaining the apparatus, traditions, and etiquette particular to the Japanese martial arts, written by American sword master, Dave Lowry (author of "Autumn Lightning"). Lowry illuminates the history and tradition of the relationships, gear, and dress that have deep significance in the context of the martial arts dojo (training space), including: the dojo itself; the sensei-student relationship; the act of bowing; the training weapons; hakama (ceremonial skirt) and dogi (practice uniform); and the shrine.
