The Muslim conquest of Visigothic Hispania began in 711. They came to occupy practically the entire Iberian Peninsula and parts of southern France. The Reconquista, which lasted for almost eight centuries, was the recovery for Christianity of what it had lost to Islam. It was a cycle of continuous exchanges between the different kingdoms to which were added the influences received from northern Europe, Africa and the East. The peninsular territory thus became a true melting pot of cultures and peoples that, over time, would give rise to the germ of what we Hispanics are today.
