Emilia Pardo Bazn published Insolacin (1889) after already having established a name for herself as a novelist with her previous two novels Los Pazos de Ulloa (1886) and La Madre Naturaleza (1887). Insolacin caused a stir when it was released. Critics and the public alike were shocked by the ending as well as by the representation of an unmarried woman's sexual attraction to a charming Southerner with a reputation of being something of a womanizer. Moreover, the dedication to Jos Lzaro Galdiano, with whom Emilia Pardo Bazn was romantically involved for a short time, seemed to indicate that the novel was in some way autobiographical.
