Ireland on the World Stage

Ireland has emerged as a significant force in the world's economy with a particular impact on the European Union. In recent years it has evolved from a relatively insular and backward country, traditionally one of the poorest in Europe, to one that has developed as a modern economic force. It has one of the fastest growing economies in Europe and the world and ranks in the top twenty exporting countries. The economic boom or 'miracle' shows no signs of abating and nor does it have the structural weaknesses that have undermined the Asian Tigers. It is predicted that the growth will continue with significant consequences on all aspects of Irish society and life as well as for Ireland's sense of its own identity and its political relationships with other nations.

The Irish story is an unusual and fascinating one and serves as an important case study of a successful modern economic and political nation.
