Feelings are sometimes hard to express, even more so for children. The children’s picture book 'It’s okay', highlights the constant change of emotions. It emphasises on the importance of expressing ones emotions rather than bottling them up under societies expectations of how one is meant to feel. These important values are conveyed through the journey of a young girl in the confusing world of emotions, not knowing how to deal with the constant change of emotions. Her ever-changing variety of emotions are supported by: colours, for example, on the page ‘Sometimes I feel sad' is made up of dark colours and ragged sharp and unpredictable shapes that support the dark gloomy atmosphere. As the story develops, a young boy makes an appearance, acting as her inner voice and reassuring her that it is ok to feel and insisting that she does not suppress her emotions but rather to accept them and be herself. The story also makes use of symbolism for example when the girl comes to realise that ‘it’s okay to feel’ her hair grows, symbolising a newfound strength that comes with accepting oneself for who one is. The story concludes by explaining that emotions are what make each individual unique.Feelings are sometimes hard to express, even more so for children.
