This book is a treatise on the nature and scope of papal power, written by German theologian Justinus Febronius in the 18th century. Febronius argued that the Catholic Church should be governed by a council rather than a pope, and that secular rulers should have greater input in ecclesiastical affairs. The book was controversial in its time and was eventually placed on the Index of Forbidden Books by the Catholic Church. Nevertheless, it remains an important work in the history of canon law and church-state relations.
