John Dene arrives in England with a fantastic innovation and plans to bolster the Admiralty. The bureaucrats in Whitehall, where, in his words, most of the roles are held by those ""whose great-grandfathers had a lovely manner of saying how-do-you-do to a prince,"" is confused and embarrassed by his directness and unusual techniques. Suddenly, John Dene vanishes, and an offer of £20,000 for information about him astounds the whole civilized world. Thousands of calls and reams of letters have left Scotland Yard disorganized. Dorothy wondered what she would do without John Dene. He was her boss, and when he returned to Canada in a few months, she would never see him again. She awoke weeping one morning from a dream in which she had boarded a boat headed for Canada.
