Joyce and the Victorians

This text examines the Victorian and Edwardian cultural contexts in Joyce's work. It argues he replicated contemporary behaviours, beliefs and attitudes in his work, but also grappled with whether modern consciousness can resist the ideological force of the culture that produces it.
