In this new edition of "Die Judenbuche" Professor Foulkes aims to provide all the information and background necessary for understanding and appreciation of the text. A brief introduction to the author is followed by a systematic attention to such matters as source and background materials, narrative technique, interpretative problems and questions of imagery and style. The introduction concludes with a modern reading of the story which suggests that the particular significance of the novella for today's reader is to be found in its evocative and symbolic treatment of humankind's destructive impulses towards the natural world which sustains it.
