Keys to Successful Immigration

American policies regarding immigration integration (as opposed to immigration itself) are handled state by state and vary widely across the country. From the example of New Jersey in the years 1980-1990, evidence is given here of how other states may manage a relatively smooth transition of their immigrant population into their economic, social and political mainstream. Particular attention is paid to the role economic climate may play, as the author believes it was significant in the case of New Jersey. It is suggested that in a state with lower unemployment rates and business failure rates, the fortunes of immigrants would be favoured and the attitudes of natives towards immigrants would be more benign. Elaborating on this theme, the author asks whether the continuing federal efforts to pursue macroeconomic growth may help state and local immigration integration.
