Stewart Rainquest is a troublemaker who comes by his orneriness naturally. Although his father was a war hero, his mother is in jail. After Stewart is suspended from school for instigating yet another rebellious event, his Grams is driving him home when a mysterious phenomenon changes everything.

After nearly all the town's population is vaporized including his beloved Grams, Stewart is left to fend for himself along with a handful of other shady characters. As Stewart sets about living like a king in his small town in the Bible Belt, things take a turn for the worse as members of the biker gang Stewart idolizes commit murder before his eyes. While doing his best to keep his distance from the lawless criminals, Stewart learns how to drive a car and meets Gina, a high school student who is dying of cancer. As their friendship leads to unwanted adventures, now only time will tell if Stuart will finally learn the truth about what happened to everyone in his town.
