Last Horizon

Last Horizon is a collection of approachable poetry which is the culmination a long life lived in the worlds of academia, consulting, construction, science, and creative writing. Its poems explore what it is to be human, especially as we humans look toward the inevitable place we cannot know until we get there-our last horizon, exploring what came before and what will be our end. Many will see their own lives within these poems.

This volume consists of three sections: A Sense of Intimacy, A Sense of Place and A sense of Spirit.

A Sense of Intimacy contains poems that deal with encouraging loved ones, the ravages of dementia, and ultimately the love of self, perhaps the most difficult form of love for us to embrace.

A Sense of Place explores an eclectic selection of experiences while describing the places where they occurred. One of those is the museum of an oppressed people where a dog biting fleas is as prominent as other museums' war heroes would be.

The verses of A sense of Spirit explore spiritual topics from the mystery birth to the wonderment of the Cosmos. In these poems, one also finds unconventional views of Biblical stories.

Hickman explores deep issues with humor, and hard-won insight, embracing the mystery of life with heartfelt reflections on ageing, dementia, and loss. These searching poems stir us with the ambiguities of life from womb to tomb and across the centuries beyond our understanding.
