The Mesolithic is regarded as a period of transition and, in recent years, a series of notable sites have been discovered in France that have begun to elucidate the nature and timing of that transition. This study begins by introducing the Mesolithic north of the Loire and the new sites and discoveries that have improved our understanding of the period, before moving on to the site of Acquigny "l'Onglas." This open-air site, which was excavated in the 1980s, highlights some of the problems in excavating such sites and, after considering taphonomic and dating problems, Souffi describes the nature of occupation at this site. Study of the lithic assemblage, alongside dating evidence, helps to define the nature of occupation at Acquigny (specifically whether it was single of successive) and what this tells us about the Mesolithic in the region as a whole.
