What makes a good leader or manager, and how can these qualities be assessed, developed and nurtured? This exciting new textbook offers students an academically rigorous yet readable introduction to leadership and management development.

Offering a thoughtful and well-structured approach, Leadership and Management Development blends critical analysis with practical illustrations. It presents ideas in an elegant way. with examples to enable the reader to see the practical value of the concepts it explores.

Covering a broad range of core topics, this book is ideal for students on management development courses at any level. Suitable for CIPD-accredited courses, each chapter is led by CIPD professional standards for teaching management development. This engaging textbook offers a range of features to aid learning, including:

  • A clear outline of learning aims and objectives at the beginning of each chapter.
  • A range of real-life examples and case studies illustrate the theories of leadership and management development, drawn from a range of different organisations such as health authorities, telecoms companies, retail chains and banks.
  • Review questions at the end of each chapter to consolidate learning.
  • Suggestions for further reading including relevant web links.

Authoritative and up-to-date, this text is written in a student-friendly yet academic style. A comprehensive reference book on management development: all-encompassing, all-embracing.  Janet Firth, Head of HR, Wolverhampton Business School

An intelligent, well-read and balanced book on management. It shows an awareness of current fads, neither belittling them nor swallowing them. The approach is thoroughly sensible throughout. It offers a cornucopia of useful theoretical reflections and reading it would take students on a comprehensive tour of much of OB and HRM, while doing this in a way which is attractively focused on management development. The use of stories, alongside both new and established theories, is a very attractive blend. David Sims, Professor of Organizational Behaviour and Head of the Faculty of Management, Cass Business School
