Henry Pierce is a troubled man. Haunted by the flashbacks of a horrific childhood and tormented by the demons from his past, Henry is stuck in a destructive cycle of trying to drown out the bygone days, ignore the present and dodge the future. Seeking solitude in The Bay, an isolated little town on a peninsula of beach and forest in the southern most parts of Tasmania, Henry attempts to make sense of a world he feels has no place for him. During his self-imposed isolation Henry meets a strange old man with whom he shares fragments of his history. But as his sanity begins to unravel, he is forced to ask himself a frightening question: is any of this real? Eventually, as both the reader and the narrator become ferociously aware that one can never truly be in full control of their lives, they are left with another question: what does control life? Told through flashbacks, dreams, nightmares and stories with the old man, Life examines the importance of the individual in an ever-changing world, the reason behind why we are here, and what there is to believe in...if anything at all.
