This book is only partially a spiritual and temporal autobiography. Since the outward circumstances of the author's life have been comparatively uneventful, they are described briefly in order to serve as an introduction to more important topics. More attention is focused on the times and the events through which he has lived. The materialism of the 50s, the counterculture and the movements of feminism and gay rights in the 60s, as well as later developments such as the rise and fall of the religious right; the emergence of Islamic fundamentalism; America's increasingly rapid slide into political leftism; these and other aspects of our postmodern society are examined from a Christian perspective as the author understands it.

Also examined are some of the problems of the nominally Bible-believing churches. Diluted concepts of faith, repentance and salvation often lead to something less than the conversion experience described in the New Testament. A deficiency in holiness, in power, and in spiritual vitality are the all-too-common results. Various areas of conformity to the world are also examined. Our testimony to the world all too often lacks power and conviction. There are reasons for this, and they can be spiritually discerned.

A chapter is also devoted to the philosophical assaults made by secularism and especially atheism on Christian teaching and practice. Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac; the massacres of the Canaanites; the problem of evil, as well as the problem of good (whence do goodness and love arise in a meaningless universe?); the age of the earth, and the historicity of Genesis - these and yet other contentious areas are examined in such a way as to demonstrate that the traditionally biblical world view in general and the reliability of the Bible in particular are just as valid today as they were in the 1st century AD. Further discussion centers on the inadequacies of secularism: on its intellectual inadequacies, its inability to account for the most fundamental aspects of the human experience, and on its social inadequacies as well. These are seen in the catastrophes that human wisdom without respect for the laws of God led to in the Soviet Union, Communist China, Nazi Germany, Pol Pot's Cambodia, and in our own society today.

The final chapter is entitled "The Wrath of God?", and raises the question of God's judgments being operative on earth in our own day, before the end times, before the tribulation. Is it possible that America also will go the way of Babylon, Greece, and Rome? Everything human must end - but the kingdom of God remains eternally.
