Little Loon on the Lake

The awe-inspiring Common Loon with its haunting primitive call echoing across the water, reminds us of the inner knowledge that we are close to and part of the earth. Although chicks leave the nest almost immediately and are able to swim, they are dependent on the adults to be fed and protected until they learn to fish and to be on their own. After its flight south for the winter, in the following spring, the bird that began life as a fluffy chick bobbing on the water returns to the northern lakes as an elegant adult to once more use its innate abilities and claim its place on the lake and in our hearts, as the spirit of the north.
