This book approaches thetopic ofthesubjective, lived experience ofhate crime fromthe perspective of Husserlian phenomenology. It provides an experientially well-grounded account ofhow and what is experienced as a hate crime, and what this reveals about ourselves as thecontinually reconstituted "subject" ofsuch experiences. Thebook shows how qualitative social science methods can be better grounded in philosophically informed theory and methodological practices toadd greater depth and explanatory power toexperiential approaches tosocial sciences topics. The Authors also highlight severalgaps and contradictions withinHusserlian analyses of prejudice, which are exposed byattempts toconcretely apply this approach tothefield ofhate crimes. Coverage includes the difficulties in providing an empathetic understanding ofexpressions of harmful formsofprejudice underlying hate crimes, including hate speech, arising from our own and others' 'life worlds'. The Authors describe a 'Husserlian-based' view ofhate crime as well as a novel interpretation ofthevalue ofthecomprehensive methodological stages pioneered byHusserl. Theintended readership includes those concerned withdiscrimination and hate crime, as well as those involved in qualitative research intosocial topics in general. Thebroader content level makes this work suitable forundergraduate and postgraduate students, even professionals within law enforcement.
