Lone Sentinels in the Near East

Lone Sentinels in the Near East is a collection of personal narratives of American women who served as missionaries in the Ottoman Empire during World War I. They witnessed and participated in the social and political changes of the time, and confronted the challenges of being women and foreigners in a patriarchal and hostile environment.
