Esta obra teatral es una muestra del costumbrismo español del siglo XIX. Ambientada en el pueblo andaluz de Écija, cuenta la historia de unos hermanos huérfanos que son acogidos por distintas familias de la localidad, cada una de las cuales representa un tipo social y cultural diferente.
