As the youngest daughter of Chinese immigrants, Bing Dempewolf wasn't expected to care for her parents. Traditionally, that responsibility should have fallen to her eldest brother. Yet, after her father's death, the role of caregiver landed on her shoulders with the sudden weight of a piano dropped from a ten-story building-fast-moving, heavy, and life-changing. Barely into her thirties, while raising her young family and managing the demands of a C-level executive role, Bing found herself in a situation where she was sandwiched between caring for her mother, who no longer seemed like herself, and tending to her own family, straddling two very different worlds, and trying to do what was best for everyone.
Love, Care & Alzheimer's: A Daughter's Memoir is a poignant and powerful narrative that delves into the complexities of caring for her aging mother as Alzheimer's disease slowly chipped away at her. Dempewolf weaves together the threads of responsibility, reconciliation, and commitment as she navigates the intricate dynamics of family and cultural expectations.
In this candid memoir, Dempewolf shares the challenges and heartbreaks of caring for her mother during a 16-year battle with Alzheimer's. Through unguarded prose, she lays bare the harsh realities of the disease and the often-overwhelming burdens placed on caregivers, along with the lack of support they frequently endure. This memoir is not a how-to guide for caring for a parent with Alzheimer's. Instead, it offers insight and support for adult children caught in the cycle of caregiving for loved ones with Alzheimer's or dementia. Through personal stories, Dempewolf seeks to assure readers that, although the journey is difficult and the outcome inevitable, they are not alone. There is hope for finding solace and even joy in the care they provide.
Bing Dempewolf is the founder and CEO of TAI-CHI Consulting, a professional HR company focused on helping veterans transition to the civilian workforce, students develop work-related experiences that complement their education, workers in transition receive career coaching and counseling, and disadvantaged workers reenter the job market. She is also the board president of The Women's Safe House in St. Louis and a board member of the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired. When she's not working or volunteering with community organizations, she enjoys spending time with her family and advocating for Alzheimer's and dementia patients, as well as supporting their caregivers. Love, Care & Alzheimer's: A Daughter's Memoir is her first book.
