Young newlyweds Alex and Laura Barnett are desperately searching for the perfect gift to give one another at Christmas. During the Depression in a small town, jobs are hard to find for Alex, a struggling, but gifted art student. Laura has left her parents' opulent home to work as a sales clerk at a local department store.
