After avenging Crying Dove's killer, Lucas Penny left the mountains and for more than a year, climbed into a bottle and roamed from city to city. In St. Louis, fate threw him together with two, freed slaves, Rufus and Sara Dogwood, who were trying to survive in the white man's world, but once again fate intervened and Rufus found himself in jail with Lucas, who was facing four murder charges, that, technically, he wasn't guilty of. It was a clear-cut case of self-defense, but the judge and jury didn't see it that way. With Sara's help, Rufus and Lucas escape and head west, where Lucas promised them, they could hide, high up in the mountains of Colorado - never realizing, Sara would wind up having her own story to tell that would be what legends are made of.
