Ludwig Daser (1526-1589), predecessor of his famous contemporary Orlando di Lasso (1532-1594) is a notoriously underrated figure among the chapel masters and composers of the Munich court chapel in the 16th century, and unjustly forgotten by researchers and the public alike. Sixty years after the publication of the last scholarly monography on Daser's life and works, this study provides a research update, using modern research methods, on his life and his composition of masses. The study testifies to the necessity of a fundamental re-evaluation of his accomplishments in the history of composition of sacred music in the House of Wittelsbach. It also presents the musical kaleidoscope of the 22 ordinaries that Daser set to music, which are published here in full for the first time and made accessible in the form of detailed critical analyses.
