Manchineel

1912. Leaving his chilly Scottish shores, 22-year-old Sandy MacNeil takes a job in the British West Indian Bank in Bridgetown, Barbados. There he finds life far removed from the strict Presbyterian society he left behind. Full of anticipation and eager to taste all that the colourful and exotic tropics has to offer, he finds the eccentric and unusual characters he is naturally drawn to between the two worlds of Bajan Colonial Society and the freer untrammeled life of the waterfront.
In keen pursuit of as much experience and sybaritic delights as he can find, he meets three beautiful young women: Lois, Maureen, and Elmo Crofts, The Golden Girl, who dares to wear the flower of the poisonous and dreaded Manchineel and whose story is woven through this tale of the West Indies.
