Life in an early 20th century New England factory town as remembered by an octogenarian, recorded on audio tape in the 1980s, is the basis for this book. May recalls the hard work of her parents and the large family they produced. She talks about the mixed feelings she had about her Irish grandmother who lived in the big house, and the fancy teas and Irish songs around the piano there. The only girl in her large family, with six brothers, May found simple pleasures in books, school and nature.The soft watercolor illustrations enhance and expand the simple text.
