Measuring Social Media Usage by Nig Students During Asuu Strikes

This study was designed to assess uses of social media among undergraduate students during the 2022 ASUU strike. Specifically, the study sought to find out the sources of news on ASUU strike among students during the 2022 ASUU strike and to determine social media platforms used by undergraduate students during the 2022 ASUU strike. The study was solely anchored on the Uses and gratifications theory. Using the survey research method, a sample size of 370 respondents were reached using the questionnaire instrument. Notably too, data gathered were analyzed using simple percentages. Findings revealed that radio/TV, social media and the internet were some of the news sources available to students during the 2022 ASUU strike. Findings further revealed that that several social media platforms were used by undergraduates during the 2022 ASUU strike, with Facebook being the most dominant. The study concluded that the most preferred forms of news on social media by undergraduate students on the 2022 ASUU strike. The study recommended that undergraduate students should be encouraged to depend on social media, radio/TV and the internet as news sources.
