A sequel to Armament Engineering: A Computer Aided Approach, by the same author, this book is an amazingly simplified approach to the design of large caliber gun systems. Although it presupposes proficiency in essential mechanical design, it is adequately self-contained. The book aims to familiarize the engineer with mechanical engineering principles which underlie numerous designs of large caliber gun systems.
The book contains six chapters with illustrative design exercises fully supported by programmes and spreadsheets on a CD ROM. All the design exercises are based on factual data. Chapter 1 covers monobloc and autofrettaged gun barrels, vibration effects and chamber design. The second chapter handles breech assemblies and the dynamics of semi automatic mechanisms. Chapter 3 covers hydro pneumatic recoil systems exhaustively. The fourth chapter is devoted to balancing gears and the last two chapters effectively deal with elevating and traversing mechanism design. Finally all the data the student is likely to require is included in an exhaustive appendix. Interwoven with a wealth of practical and theoretical information, this volume, with its attached CD ROM is a must for military colleges offering gun design as a specialization.
