I share my fifty years of experience practicing general medicine, emergency room medicine, and psychiatry with the client during the first office visit.This is not an urgent setting like a hospital where the client is suicidal, homicidal, or gravely disabled and the risk of not treating the client exceeds the risk of the medications.The client is encouraged to exhaust the alternatives to medications before accepting the hundreds of medication side effects that come with any medication.The client is introduced to meditation and cognitive behavior therapy during the first visit with education as to mental illness and medications is started.
