In 1821, the short-lived Republic of Spanish Haiti was annexed by the Haitian Government. In 1844, Juan Pablo Duarte and the Trinitarios re-established independence, and the nation previously known as Spanish Haiti was re-named the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Military subsequently defeated several major invasions by the larger Haitian Military throughout the 1840s and 1850s, maintaining Dominican Sovereignty. In the aftermath of the wars, a young Dominican sergeant named Anibal Hector Medina completes his military duties and soon finds a new purpose as a rebel in the war against the Spanish Empire and their occupation during the Dominican War of Restoration in 1863. Anibal Medina enters the conflict for the liberation of his people and later joins the fight to end Spanish rule in Cuba and Puerto Rico.
