Two souls started a rivalry on Atlantis thousands of years ago and had reincarnated and killed each other in different parts of the world through the millenniums. Their last encounter was in 1805 on the island of Haiti-Bohio, where Benepre Saint-Ange, the good soul, had attained spiritual enlightenment, which prevented him from enacting the curse against his nemesis, Sam Mauvais, the evil sorcerer. Benepre died in 1807 at ninety-nine years of age. Soon after, Sam began to exert his authority in in the village and acquired notoriety by killing Biishou Na, a young Tano native descendent of the former Xaragua kingdom of queen Anacaona. In 1809, Sam reignited the torch of the rivalry with Leon Saint-Ange, Benepre Saint-Ange's grandson, for wrongly believing that his grandfather had not taught him the art of wizardry. That triggered a war between the Atlanteans and the renegade former former Atlanteans who had become demons, including the sorcerers who served and worshiped them.
The demons wanted to stop the birth of Leon Saint-Ange's child, whom the Atlanteans hoped to be their redeemer for a mistake they made thousands of years ago. For his unborn child's safety, Leon wanted to bring his wife, Simone, to live with her parents in the city of Miragoane because of the lake, which was where the Atlanteans lived. The demons and sorcerers vowed not to let them reach the city.
