In June 1755, following the British assault on Fort Beausjour on the Acadian border, Tonin Grandmont, known as le Comtois, a 26-year-old soldier of Comtois origin, lay dying on the battlefield. He wakes up to find Delphine Brassaud, a young Acadian from a neighbouring village, at his bedside. Their bond is immediate. Taken to Louisbourg for treatment, Tonin is separated from Delphine however. Their love is swept away by the storm. Thrust into the middle of events, at a time when the conflict between the French and the British is at its peak, Tonin has only one goal in mind: to find his beloved. Meanwhile, Delphine and her family flee to the St Lawrence valley in a harrowing exodus. From the Shire to the Quebec City region, the story comprises settings ranging from Acadia, and the exile and deportation of the Acadians, to the fall of Louisbourg and the majesty of the St Lawrence river. Love, war and hope. The characters are part of history, a reminder of the suffering of the people who were forcibly displaced: women, children, soldiers as well as ordinary people. This is a fictional story at the heart of a larger story that is part of history.
