Multimodal Comics

Comics have always embraced a diversity offormats, existing in complex relationships to othermedia, and been dynamic in their response to newtechnologies and means of distribution. Thiscollection explores interactions between comics,other media and technologies, employing a widerange of theoretical and critical perspectives. Byfocusing on key critical concepts withinmultimodality (transmediality, adaptation,intertextuality) and addressing multiple platformsand media (digital, analogue, music, prose,linguistics, graphics), it expands and developsexisting comics theory and also addressesmultiple other media and disciplines. Over the last decade Studies in Comics has beenat the forefront of international research in comics.This volume showcases some of the best researchto appear in the journal. In so doing itdemonstrates the evolution of Comics Studiesover the last decade and shows how this researchfield has engaged with various media andtechnologies in a continuously evolving artistic andproduction environment. The theme ofmultimodality is particularly apt since media andtechnologies have changed significantly duringthis period. The collection will thus give a view ofthe ways in which comics scholars have engagedwith multimodality during a time when "modes"were continually changing.
