Nathaniel Hawthorne (1800- 1864) was born and grew in the puritan environment of Salem, Massachusetts. After the death of his father, and his mother's withdrawal, the young Nathaniel, the reclusive boy, grew under the influence of his mother's relatives. Living under such circumstances made him a man who nourished worries regarding man and his relationship with the society on one hand and with his God on the other; they are what we call today as social and individualistic moral concerns. In his works, time and time again, he tried to deal with social and individualistic moral concerns and dilemmas. On the whole he had some moral responsibility to fulfill in his writing carrier; the moral responsibility that he grew and tried to fulfill in his works of literature.
