Epilepsy refers to a group of non-communicable neurological disorders characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures. Due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain, epileptic seizures can range from brief and nearly undetectable periods to long periods of vigorous shaking. Physical injuries can occur as a result of these episodes, either directly such as broken bones or through causing accidents. Excessive and abnormal neuronal activity in the cortex of the brain, which may be seen in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of an individual, is the underlying mechanism of epileptic seizures. Epilepsy can be caused by both genetic and acquired factors. Serious brain trauma, stroke, tumors, and brain problems originating from a previous infection are the acquired causes. Epilepsy is normally managed with daily medication, in patients who have suffered a second seizure. However, medication may be taken after the first seizure in patients at high risk for subsequent seizures. This book is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about neurobiology of epilepsy. It will help the readers in keeping pace with the rapid changes in this field.
