Once a quiet south Devon market town on the River Teign, in the mid-nineteenth century Newton Abbot became the centre of the GWR's locomotive and carriage repair workshops, beginning a process of change and development that continues today. Although no longer the railway capital of the south-west, Newton Abbot continues to prosper.
