When Hollywood clashes with conservative Orange County, California, probation officer Linda Davenport finds herself in the middle of the uproar.
"Anyone but me!" she declares, upon learning that handsome, squeaky clean, movie star, Damian Calloway, has been arrested for sexual molestation, and the court wants probation to prepare a pre-trial report. But the chief probation officer wants no one but Linda to handle the case, and personally assigns it to her.
Linda's tumultuous first year as a probation officer is behind her, and she is comfortable in her assignment as an adult court investigator. She's engaged to her college love, David Wyndham, and is certain her life has settled down nicely. Now this!
The media is in a frenzy over Calloway's arrest, and everyone involved with the case is a target for their scrutiny. Linda is warned to keep a low profile as she sorts out why Calloway was outside a country bar late at night in San Juan Capistrano, far from his home in Los Angeles. He adamantly denies any wrongdoing, and demands a speedy trial. Is it true that "no good deed" goes unpunished? Or is it a "good deed?"
In the meantime, Linda learns that her mother is coming for a two-week visit, her first since Linda left Michigan for California. She was never in favor of the move, and will now have two weeks to express her opinions and create further tension in Linda's life. When Linda tries to satisfy her mother's curiosity about movie stars, her efforts backfire, and the newspapers have a field day making Linda look biased.
Her life is further complicated when information she learns about Calloway challenges his "perfect" reputation. But does it make him a molester? A critical decision must be made.
Before the truth comes out, Linda must defend her reputation on the witness stand, resolve conflicts with her mother, and have a final confrontation with Damian Calloway.
