Sam and Erin were high school sweethearts. When Sam decided to join the Marine Corps in 2003, the trajectory of their lives was sealed. Sam ultimately sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, and the next thirteen years centered around Sam's survival.

Despite their tragedy, a young Sam and Erin made a promise to each other-a promise to never stop striving to be the best versions of themselves, to live life to the fullest, and to never give up hope. Erin did everything in her power to live up to that promise during Sam's life, which has now become her mantra as she continues on without him.
