There has been a recent focus on non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) in the Third Generation Partnership Project’s (3GPP) work in developing 5G technologies with the recent Rel-17. Non-Terrestrial Networks: Paving the way towards Global Connectivity presents technologies that are important for NTNs - from LEO satellite communication, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)/flying platforms assisted wireless networking through to the use of machine learning, edge computing, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, multiple access, wireless backhaul/fronthaul, integrated access and backhaul, integrated sensing and communications, and high frequency channel modeling such as terahertz, sub-terahertz and millimeter wave. These technologies are essential in providing a paradigm shift from current wireless standards and will usher in the development of exciting new vertical frameworks. Non-Terrestrial Networks: Paving the Way Towards Global Connectivity gives students and researchers in academia an understanding of the fundamentals, technologies, systems and techniques for the next generation NTNS. It gives industry engineers insight into the interdisciplinary findings on many open issues and trends in NTN standardization.
- Presents how different systems and techniques can be employed for the next generation NTNs to fulfil the vision and objectives of the latest trends of standardization on NTN internet-of-things (IoT) performance enhancement
- Gives a structured and integrated presentation along 5 key themes: Architectures for NTN, Networking techniques for NTNs, Physical Layer techniques for NTN, Emerging technologies for NTN, Use cases for NTN, including public safety
- Presents methods and algorithms useful for the deployment of NTNs
- Outlines future directions for research
