Il libro è suddiviso in dieci giornate, ciascuna dedicata a un itinerario diverso, in cui l'autore si sofferma ad analizzare gli aspetti architettonici, artistici e storici delle principali attrazioni napoletane. Nel 1845 la guida fu aggiornata ed ampliata dall'abate Giuseppe Albini, che aggiunse informazioni sui progressi scientifici, tecnologici e sociali della città fino a quel momento.
